ESD workbenches are used in assembly lines and reparation workplaces to prevent Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) events from occurring and damaging the product. They are a key element of many Electrostatic Discharge Protected Areas (EPAs) in the electronic industry.

ESD workbenches integrate high resistance dissipative surfaces rather than fully conductive surfaces. Dissipative materials have a surface resistance between 1 x 10⁵ and 1 x 10¹¹ ohms/square, and conductive materials have a surface resistance lower than 1 x 10⁵ ohms/square. The high resistance dissipative surfaces have high impedance which prevents short circuits and fast discharges, reducing the chances of product damage. The safety of the operator is also better ensured with a high resistance dissipative surface, in the unlikely event of high voltages to be present in the system.

The ESD workbench characteristics

An ESD workbench typically consists of a number of different elements:

Static dissipative work surface: The working surface of an ESD workbench should have a resistance value between 1.0 x 10⁹ Ω and 1.0 x 10⁶ Ω . This is a requirement to prevent any static discharge that might damage the product. Additionally, it is necessary to avoid any safety issue caused by high voltages discharge.

Shelves : Electronic parts of the product and working tools might be placed in the shelves, thus, to avoid the accumulation of static charges, these need to be as well static dissipative. In fact, all elements of the ESD workbench should be static dissipative.

Cupboards: The cupboards in ESD workbenches might be used to store working tools, thus, as for the shelves, these should have static dissipative surfaces.

ESD wrist straps: Even though not an element of the ESD workbench, the ESD wrist strap is a necessary equipment of this working space. Every operator should wear an ESD wrist strap to ensure that no discharge occurs.

Wiring: All static dissipative surfaces, wrist straps and metalwork should be connected to a common grounding point. It is important to place the wiring in a suitable manner considering electrical safety and discharge effectiveness.

ESD Workbenches Alpha

VIKING technical and ESD workbenches of ALPHA series with lateral aluminum frames are stylish and ergonomic workstations that can perfectly equip unspecified technical premises and educational facilities. Alpha series workbenches are distinguished by practical modular construction and compact size. They allow effective use of hall space.

We offer four models of ALPHA series workbenches:

ALF Single workbench

This comfortable workbench is perfect for small premises which require space-saving equipment. It is recommended for office and engineering personnel, also used for training and educational premises. Workbench is supplied in a set with 2 perforated panels. Tabletop thickness 25 mm.

ESD Workbenches Alliance

Viking technical and ESD workbenches of Alliance series feature elegant design, advanced ergonomics and convenient system of height adjustment. Due to possibility of broadened worktop, main shelf and lighting height adjustments, these workbenches are very comfortable to work at, even in the upright position. One can quickly make any adjustments by his own and fix working surfaces by key wrenches.

Standard Alliance workbenches are powder-coated in dark grey color (RAL 7012) for lower steel modules and light grey color (RAL 7035) for tabletops and shelves.

Possible tabletop height adjustment: 600–1300 mm.

Possible lighting height adjustment: 1200–2000 mm.

ESD Workbenches Gamma

GAMMA SERIES workbenches are technical and ESD workbenches based on the concept of clear surfaces, where all technical communications are hidden and the fasteners organically fit the design.

All horizontal surfaces of the workbench are mounted to inverted-L shape supports, which mask built-in technical communications, electrical and lighting connections and all necessary fixture, keeping the workspace clear.

Available as technical and ESD workbenches.

GM GAMMA Workbench

The workbench is supplied in a set: workbench with inverted-L shape side supports, main shelf, upper LED lighting, upper and lower perforated panels and side built-in power panel.

Available in two versions, depending on the location of built-in power panel: with the right (PR in coding, for example GM-18/ PR) or the left (L in coding, for example GM-12/L) power unit in the side panel. The built-in power panel is equipped with 6 sockets (5 with grounding and one without grounding) and a switch button.

Tabletop height adjustment: 3 positions – 740mm, 800mm, 860mm. Additional supports height adjustment – 20 mm.

Upper LED lighting is built into the top horizontal hanger above the tabletop.

ESD Workbenches Alliance Automatic

ALLIANCE Automatic technical and ESD workbenches are electric adjustable workstations distinguishable by their elegant design, advanced ergonomics and motorized worktop adjustment system. ESD Workbenches Alpha Universal

ALPHA UNIVERSAL technical and ESD workbenches are simplified ALPHA series workbenches without upper modules.

These workbenches allow several extensions:

– Box with plastic fibers and power panel

– Optional drawer unit

Box with plastic fibers

A metal box with the power panel is mounted to the back side of ALPHA universal workbench. The box’s lid is covered with plastic fibers to protect the power panel from dust and cuttings. It can also be used as a worktop extension which makes the workbench depth 180 mm longer.

The power panel consists of 8 sockets in an aluminium case with protective contact and 3 m cable. Nominal load capacity: 10 A.

Storage solution for tools and components, no place on floor required. Equipped with a central lock.

ESD Workbenches Universal

The UNIVERSAL technical and ESD workbenches are the simplest and one of the cheapest workbenches in our product range. UNIVERSAL workbenches do not allow any upper extension, but can be placed in a line with no gaps.

The 700 mm and 900 mm depth SU workbenches can be equipped with TP-01/P and TP-02/P Optional drawer units.

SPECIALIZED Workbenches for Optical Fiber

The SPECIALIZED ESD workbenches are available as a workbench set and a single workbench.

Workbench’s worktop and main shelf are covered with black ESD plastic (RAL 9005) to provide convenience for optical fibers works.

The workbench set is supplied with main shelf and lighting, while the single workbench is supplied separately.

KS Movable computer equipment workbench

This is a space-saving movable workbench for computer and measurement equipment storage and transportation.

Movable workbench for computer and measurement equipment is equipped with four 50 mm casters, 2 of which are with brakes.

The standard tabletop size is 900×700 mm and the tabletop height adjustment is 650 to 1000 mm.

Movable workbench for computer and measurement equipment has two shelves: 900×300 mm upper shelf and 900×400 mm lower shelf, both with 70 kg load capacity and a keyboard support.

USS-SU Corner connecting workbench

Corner connecting technical and ESD workbenches are used to build up inseparable working areas. These are connectors for two standard Classic, Comfort or Constant workbenches.

Increased depth of tabletop and load capacity of 200 kg allows storing and using heavy or bulky equipment.

Corner connecting technical and ESD workbenches are produced in 2 sizes to match 700 mm depth workbenches and 900 mm depth workbenches. Perforated panel, main and additional shelves, lighting units and power panels can be mounted to corner connecting workbench on request.

How to maintain my ESD workbench?

A good maintenance of the ESD workbench is necessary for a long lasting static dissipative effect on the surfaces. The following steps are recommended:

– Avoid damaging the surfaces with sharp objects.

– Frequently clean the surfaces to prevent accumulation of grease or other dirt films that impede the static dissipation. Cleaning should be done according to the manufacture manual.

– Do not use wax based cleaners or solvents because they may attack the dissipative surface.

– Do not use abrasive cleaners because they may remove or damage the dissipative surface.

– Test periodically the electrical connections and surfaces of the ESD workbench to ensure that its ESD protection is working.
